Francesca Duranti was born in Genoa. She lives now in the Tuscan countryside and spends a lot of time in New York too. Her first book, La Bambina was published in Italy in 1976, followed by Piazza mia bella piazza in 1978. International acclaim came in 1984 with La casa sul lago della luna (The house on moon lake), translated in 18 countries, including USA and UK. Her following books, many of them widely translated as well, are Lieto fine (Happy ending) in 1987, Effetti personali (Personal effects) in 1988, Ultima stesura in 1991, Progetto Burlamacchi in 1994, Il comune senso delle proporzioni in 2000. The English version of Sogni Mancini (1996) was written by Duranti herself (Left-handed dreams) and published by Delphinium books in Usa and Troubador in UK.
Francesca Duranti was awarded most of the prestigious Italian literary prizes, such as Premio Bagutta, Premio Martina Franca, Premio Basilicata, Super Campiello, Città di Milano, Hemingway, Rapallo, Castiglioncello. In France she was awarded the Prix de lectrices de «Elle» (Rouen).
